The ICU is the acronym for a care unit present in almost every hospital. It is popular with the full name of the Intensive care unit. ICU, also known as intensive therapy/treatment unit. Is known to provide a concentrated treatment to its admitted patients. That also contains the required care and medicines. This body of the hospital is made for extremely urgent cases. That may be the case of a serious accident, injury, illness or any kind of life-threatening disease. Moreover, extreme blood loss or some near-to-death injury. Are the prime causes this body of the hospital remains alive for. The ICU doctors and nurses are specialists in their fields. They are highly qualified, well trained and are experienced. All these qualities are necessary to handle patients. Going through an extremely dangerous and life-threatening phase of their life.


Coming to its history, ICU originated due to the pain of wars. It was the time of 1854. When people were made aware of building separate units in the hospitals. That is supposed to take care of the wounded and critically injured soldiers. However, the entire concept of ICU has originated from wars. Later, in the nineteenth century, Peter Safar was known to take this awareness seriously. Safar was the first person, who promoted the idea. Of keeping patients, under proper ventilation and sedation in the care units. ICUs are also known as Critical Care Units (CCUs). However, knowing ICU full form in the hospital is worth it.



IS ICU's CARE QUESTIONABLE?


The answer is simply no, not at all. The reason being most of the ICUs in the world are operated on a doctor to patient ratio. Every second ICU, are provided with the appropriate amount of caretakers. Especially those, which contains ventilated patients. Moreover, a ratio of two nurses to one patient is recommended. This will ease the highly difficult cases to handle. Coming to the strictness of treatment of the patients. The ICU has created an international system. Under which, they are checked regularly. The two most used tools for it are the CAM-ICU and the ICDSC. First is based on an assessment technique. Whereas, the other is based on a checklist method. That is prepared on the basis of the behaviour of these patients. Coming to their respective manuals. Moreover, they are present and distributed in several different global languages. That makes their users easier to read and implement on the patients. However, knowing ICU full form in the hospital is worth it.



EQUIPMENT USED IN THE ICU:


1. Ventilators: These are the common equipment. Needed by a patient once he/she enters the unit. They usually ease the breathing process. By the use of an endotracheal or a tracheostomy tube.

2. Monitors: These are computer screens. Used to navigate over patients behaviour. The screens notes and displays the data usually in the form of graphs. Moreover, they are also known as cardiac monitors. Used mainly to monitor the heartbeat of a patient.

3. Tubes: A variety of tubes are used. Mostly to assist, help and ease the various process. They are inserted either directly or indirectly in the patient's body. Basic tubes are the food tubes - for helping them with food. Intravenous tubes - that help transport fluids within the veins of the body. They are usually used to insert medicines or some antiseptic and helpful fluids.

4. Pumps, drains and catheters: ICU can't be made without these items. Pumps are used to accelerate the flow within the body. They work by pushing the material inside. Either it maybe some sort of medicine or curing syrup. However, drains are used to drain out the waste materials from the body. They are used when the patient's body is unable to do it naturally. Syringe pumps are also used to put up syringes for a cure.



TYPES OF PATIENTS FOUND IN ICU:


1. Seriously injured: ICUs come up over a thousand cases of serious injury. These patients may be injured by accident, fight, burn etc. ICUs are required to closely monitor such cases. To help the patient regain his/her normal rate of metabolism. An extreme level of blood loss may slow their metabolism by any per cent.

2. Complaints with lungs: ICUs are also aware of such cases, that come with serious lung issues. Lung inflammation due to injury or viral attack. May require some serious and concerning ventilation. ICUs are required to monitor upon such patients with care.

3. Having a heart complaint: Patients with such problems may be given special care with. Those who face random change in blood pressures. Will likely have some serious cardiac issues. This is another type of patient needed to be kept in the ICU.

4. Fighting the infection: There are a ton of infectious virus. Those who are fighting such infections. Are usually, found in the ICU. These infections are unpredictable. But once they enter, they began growing like a tree. Such cases require serious care by the ICU itself.




HOW A RELATIVE FEELS IN THE ICU:


When it comes to the ICU space. These units are quite large with sterile areas. They are usually very calm places to step in. But once, you find your patient. You can't wait for a second to get sad or emotional. ICUs represents high health risks for the patients. This is sometimes challenging for the relatives. To mention, ICUs are quiet places. But their tools like the monitors, machines, tubes are simply
