Full form for LED: Light Emitting Diode.

Technically, an LED is a semiconductor device that is known to emit light. These devices are very trending in the market. However, LEDs are also known as solid-state devices. They are widely used for decorating lighting or celebration lightings. The light-emitting diode is able to produce a variety of several different colours of light. LEDs are used during the occasion of lights (like Diwali - an Indian festival) and for several different purposes. Being efficient in power consumption, LED is used in certain spots. Where continuous light energy is required for long periods of time. Knowing the LED full form is worth it.


LEDs are not built yesterday or before some days. It has a history around 1907. It was invented after knowing a fact about Si carbide crystals. Scientifically, Si crystals can produce light in the presence of electricity At the beginning red LED was invented, later yellow LED and ultimately the invention became to go for each colour that exists. Moreover, knowing the LED full form is worth it.


APPLICATIONS OF AN LED:



1. Indication: Due to its tiny size it is widely used for indication purposes. There are millions of tech gadgets and testers that come with LED in them. It helps them to get indications regarding their experiments and actions. Television remotes, a.c remotes etc. have LEDs that glow whenever a button is pressed.

2. Outdoor lighting and decorations: Tiny light rays look adorable in dark. LEDs are used in outdoor lighting. Which not only decorates the scene but also makes our eyes dance. They glow in a certain pattern, which is just fun to watch.
3. Street lights: Day in and day out we walk under the street lights. It is a fact to wonder that those lights contain the light-emitting diodes. Such diodes have a long life span and hence are employed in the street poles. Roads are illuminated with such bright LEDs, that gives us a vision in the night time.
4. Medical instruments: A lot of medical instruments requires proper indications. LEDs can do that as an expert. Such diodes are tiny and hence helps the doctor to know if everything is going accordingly or not. A lot of testers and medical equipment comes with indicating LEDs.
5. Domestic lighting: Being so good with power consumptions. These diodes are widely used in domestic lighting. They impart quality light and has a long life also. Using them for your home lighting is a great idea.


PROS OF LED:


1. Long life: LEDs are designed to have a longer life than other light emitters. Being power efficient also, it can last for about 40 years without fail. However, the working hour is a great factor to notice. Such diodes have a life span of around 60k to 100k. They impart quality light having a long life span.
2. Vibration Proof: LEDs are not easily damaged. Even strong vibration waves can't damage them. They are made with strong materials that can easily help them to stay for a very long period of time. LEDs do not contain suspended filaments inside. This is the reason they can withstand vibrations.
3. Suitable for snowy regions: LED lights are completely unaffected by the surroundings. The environment doesn't matter at all. They are free from the usual on-off cycles, which makes them tolerate even lower temperatures. LEDs can be easily used in snowy regions.
4. Less heat production: Unlike normal light emitters, LEDs convert almost 80 to 90 per cent of the electricity to light energy. However, only 10 per cent of the electric current is converted to heat. These diodes are high energy efficient, enabling them to remain lit even in less voltage.


CONS OF LED:


1. Attracts insects: LEDs are known to attract a lot of insects. This creates an unwanted disturbance for the people. It is noticed to attract 2x more insects than normal sodium lamps. Insects are highly disturbing in nature. Open spaces having LEDs literally messes the entire population out there.

2. Sensitive to the potential difference: LEDs are highly sensitive to voltage. They are required to supply with a voltage above the minimum (threshold) voltage. The potential difference has a great effect on its life and longevity.

3. Low efficiency: LEDs has high efficiency. They may lose their efficiency. In case the supply voltage increases along with the current. Getting a higher-current supply, may reduce its life. And cause it to produce unwanted heat.

4. Causes pollution: Emitting light can also produce pollution. It is known as blue pollution. LEDs are noticed to produce a high amount of blue light, that may affect the UV region in the atmosphere.



TERMS RELATED TO AN LED:


1. Photon: A particle carrying light energy is called a photon. It is a basic unit of light. Photons are emitted by LEDs when electricity is passed through the terminals. A photon carries energy which varies proportionally with its EMF.
2. CRI: Likewise, colour rendering index is the ability of an LED is its ability to show colours via its light radiations. These are mostly used in artworks, decorations and patterns.
3. Lumens: It is defined as the amount of light that is visible to the naked eye. However, more the number of lumens present in the light. Better and brighter the light will be.
